Cinco De Mayo-- Mexican Healthy?

So in the spirit of Cinco De Mayo, I thought I'd post my helpful tips on how to enjoy Mexican food (one of my all time favorites!) without wrecking havoc on your diet! Here are my top 5 tips for you:

1. Skip the deep fried chip basket. Do it. Avoid it. Its like a death trap! One serving is 7 whole chips (usually about 130 calories and 7g fat). Can you stop at 7 chips?? I sure can't. Your best bet is to avoid it all together. If you lack self control, ask the server to take it away ;)

2. Your best bet for food choices is a grilled chicken dish or the insides of fajitas. Skip the flour tortillas and either ask for whole wheat or corn tortillas or just eat the insides from the skillet! My fave thing to do is pour salsa on top of my chicken fajitas and eat them that way. Yummy, lots of protein and lower fat and calories.

3. Condiments at a Mexican restaurant can be hard too. Skip the cheese and sour cream out and about because they are most likely full fat versions. Use salsa and guacamole. If they offer lower fat sour cream (Qdoba does, for example) then ask for that.

4. Tortilla soup that is broth based is a great way to start an appetizer if you are avoiding the chip basket.

5. Margaritas. We love them, but they are full of sugar and calories. Luckily, if you are making them yourself, you can choose a sugar free margarita mix that is a no-calorie option (of course not counting the alcohol). Some restaurants offer lower sugar margaritas now too. If you do choose to indulge in a drink, make sure you eat some food with it to help absorb some of the alcohol... and always drink responsibly!
